Exercise 5.4: Online exhibitions

Looking at the land – Slideshow

Looking at the Land — 21st Century American Views from Andy Adams on Vimeo.

Looking at the land is indeed an impressive slideshow. The images are from different photographers however they sit together really well. I think by presenting each slide in the same format helps to create coherence however the carefully chosen order also helps. It’s difficult to pin down exactly ‘why a piece works’. I’m not sure there’s a specific blueprint but rather an experienced eye.

I’m often impressed by how work is presented in gallerys. I remember viewing a collection of mostly black and white work. The walls were painted a dark green colour which really worked well. I like the accessibility of the online slideshow. If you have a large screen to view it on then that’s a bonus. There is option to pause on images you want to spend time with. Also navigating backwards and forward saves time on your feet.

I attended an Annie Liebowitz exhibition where there were physical images on display but also large screens that had slideshows of her work. It was a great way of fitting in an awful lot of work into a small space. The ‘viewers’ were able to wander around and had the option of taking a seat for a while and look at the slideshow. It was a nice way to view her work. It felt very relaxed and communal.
