Chrystel Lebas

I was advised by my tutor to look at the work of Chrystel Lebas. Many of the projects fit nicely with the kind of mood and visual strategy that I was hoping to achieve in assignment two.

The images below are from a project titled “Natural History”. The images are ‘botanical’ in nature but with their dark background and the specific leaves and flowers being highlighted by gentle bands of light coming through the trees, the images have a mystical and fairytale ambience. There is a sense that the viewer is being treated to a special view like a botanist searching the dark undergrowth for species of flora.

The images below are titled “Presence”. They are a collection of video stills taken of the fog retreating during nightfall. The video itself is played on a loop accompanied by the sounds of the animals in the forest. The aim is to allow the viewer to experience this beautiful act of nature in real time.

The colourisation of the images are indicative of blue hour which gently fades to the black of night. The images are ethereal and I would say, sublime.

‘The Quest’ below would have made an excellent submission for the journey assignment. The whole project consists of 67 images taken along a familiar childhood walk. The images were taken every two meters. Whilst the walk is familiar it is also unfamiliar and there is a sense of the camera recording those random things that we spot along a path. Some of the images are in soft focus and some are at angles. Whilst there is quite a variety in the images they hang together cohesively in the way that they progress.
