Launching in

I understand we’re encouraged to reflect on our learning, so here goes.

I hesitated before signing up to level two. The truth is I ran out of steam at the end of Identity and place. It had been a busy year and I’d been squeezing my studies into the little fragments of time that I had available. There’s a bit more I could have done in terms of fine tuning the assignments but I’ve decided to make the best of it and move on.

So I’ve come to Landscape with a different attitude. Landscape photography is about slowing things down and that’s what I intend to do. Level one has given me a good grounding in how to approach my studies and in particular the pathway through creating a piece of work. Initial idea -> research -> test shots -> review -> concept -> visual component -> tutor submission -> review and reflect -> final edit/reshoot -> presentation for assessment.

Whilst I’m clearer on what’s expected of me, I’m riddled with self-doubt. My goal in Identity and place was to work on how to develop a concept but I feel that my final images were of poor quality. My goal in this unit is to work on my technical ability. I’ve done loads of reading but lack experience and practical application. I intend to make my themes and locations simpler and more manageable so I’ve got the opportunity to reshoot and get those nearer perfect exposures rather than making do.

I’m in the process of planning the first assignment and I can’t wait to get out there. It’s been a while since I’ve been out with my camera. I think the break has been a good thing. I’ve bought a new camera, again I hesitated as it’s a big investment but now that it’s arrived, I’m excited.
